Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about ShareLeftovers.

Yes, ShareLeftovers is 100% free for both donors and volunteers. We are a community-powered platform. There are no fees, subscriptions, or hidden charges. We rely on voluntary donations to keep the platform running.

You can donate prepared meals, packaged food, fresh produce, bakery items, dairy products, and more. The food should be safe, fresh, and within its edible timeframe. We ask that you clearly describe the food, list any allergens, and note if refrigeration is required so volunteers can transport it safely.

You will receive status updates throughout the process. When a volunteer claims your donation, picks it up, and delivers it, each step is logged with a timestamp. You can also message the volunteer directly through the platform to coordinate and follow up.

In the United States, the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act protects food donors from civil and criminal liability when donating food in good faith. As long as the food is donated honestly and without gross negligence, you are legally protected. Many states have additional protections as well.

Absolutely! When you register, you can select both the donor and volunteer roles. You can post food donations when you have surplus and volunteer to pick up and deliver other people's donations when you have time. Many of our most active members do both.

If you know of a shelter, food bank, church, school, or community center that accepts food donations and is not listed on our locations page, please contact us with the details. We will verify the information and add it to our directory so volunteers can deliver food there.

Donors set a pickup window when posting their donation, and volunteers should arrive within that time frame. Since food safety is a priority, we encourage donors to set realistic pickup windows and volunteers to deliver promptly. If refrigeration is required, the listing will indicate that.

If the event date passes without a volunteer claiming your donation, it will automatically expire. We recommend posting donations as early as possible to give volunteers time to plan. You can also cancel and re-post with a different pickup window if needed.
